• Crystal Mixtapes #4, 5, and 6: Ruby, Sapphire, and Garnet

Hey all! Sorry for the delay, but guess what's back and bigger than before? The Crystal Mixtapes! Today, we are looking at not one, not two, but three different gems and the songs that I personally think work with them! And, as usual, I encourage you to share what you think too! Are you ready to look at Ruby, Sapphire, and Garnet?

(Now remember, this is an opinion based article of Little Ursa pairing songs that he believes reflect the character. You are more than welcome to share your feedback in the comments, and even share what songs you might think could work. Click on the song title to listen, and on the musician name to go to learn more about them.)

I would like to say this before I go on, I know Estelle voices Garnet. I love Estelle's voice and music, but I wanted to go away from the obvious choices for music.

For this edition of the Crystal Mixtapes, I'm going to be doing smaller playlists for each of these characters (seeing how two of them create the third), to make one larger playlist. So, without further ado, let's look at the power couple.

    Ruby

    1. "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)" by Shonen Knife

I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees Ruby as a fiery passion with a love of fighting. Also, this song is one I'm sure some of you might remember from back in the day.

    2. "Dreaming" by Blondie

This song I selected for one reason: I see it as Ruby's reaction to her first fusing with Sapphire. It's something that just puts her over the moon and is something she just loves.

    3. "New" by No Doubt

Similar to the previous choice, this No Doubt song is in relation to Ruby and Sapphire fusing. "Don't let it go away,/This feeling has got to stay."

    4. "You Ain't Alone" by The Alabama Shakes

When Ruby and Sapphire were alone on Earth, this song is something that I see Ruby singing to Sapphire, offering to comfort her through the strange new world.

    Sapphire

    1. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Dum Dum Girls

A cover of a song by The Smiths, this song gives a poppy and bright sound to the dark lyrics of wanting to stay together.

    2. "A Place For Us" by Fitz And The Tantrums

This line: "But as long as we're together, we can go anywhere." That alone made me choose this song.

    3. "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure

According to the writer of the song, Robert Smith, the song is about "hyperventilating—kissing and fainting to the floor", which I think is something Sapphire and Ruby had experienced during their first fusion together. In fact, we saw Sapphire hyperventilating after she and Ruby had eluded capture.

    4. "Clearest Blue" by CHVRCHES

Now, the obvious aside (yes, Sapphire is blue and the song has blue in the title), this song was the first one I chose for Sapphire. I have nothing to really say but give it a listen.

    Garnet

    1. "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green

I'm sure we all can agree Garnet would be a fan of R&B, and this classic song is something that beautiful fits the power couple.

    2. "Higher Ground" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Covering the legendary Stevie Wonder, this song is a one that I can see Garnet totally kicking Homeworld tail to. Just listen to Flea play that bass.

    3. "Stylo" by Gorillaz

Mos Def with a hip hop intro? Check. Bobby Womack singing his heart out? Check. Soulful funk? Double check.

    4. "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree

Some time ago, I saw a music video of Garnet with this song and I honestly can't see a better song for Garnet. Soulful self-determination.

Albums from the listed songs in chronological order

And that will do it for these three versions of the Crystal Mixtapes! I do hope you enjoyed giving the songs a listen. But what are some song selections you think that would be fitting for Pearl?
