I wonder if losing one of their own made the Diamonds more sympathetic. Yes, Yellow Diamond wants to destroy the Earth, but that's just full of humans, not gems (as far as she knows). Maybe they stopped shattering so many of their own for simple mishaps after that. Seems like they didn't tolerate much failure before. Maybe they finally realized what it was like to lose someone close.
