Human beings! So cool, so great! None of that freaky weird half gem stuff that can't be understood by mortals, haha! I wonder if Steven will ever confront Connie or his dad about their secret human bonding time. It has to be a bit of a blow to Steven that Connie and Greg have secret meetings without him, combined with the fact that the Crystal Gems are always hiding things from him as well. He doesn't fit in either world, and it's a little sad... but also a little relatable for some people.

'Steven's Birthday' gave great insight into how gems grow - or don't. It also taught viewers that it's okay if you don't grow at the same rate as your peers - either physically or in maturity. Much of the fandom was shocked to find out Steven was 14, as was Connie. That's because he LOOKS her age, 12, which is entirely intentional. He seemed to have a growth spurt at a young age and now he's stopped. Sure, someday he'll probably grow up, just like in 'So Many Birthdays'. But it'll happen when he's ready, and the same applies to regular humans. Check out the A.V. Club's great review of the episode at the link below!

Steven's Birthday was a great look at how gem growth works. So, gems can't stretch themselves for extended lengths. But can they make themselves smaller? As we saw in 'We Need To Talk', Amethyst was definitely smaller than she currently is. Regardless, Connie and Steven were shipped super hard in this episode! Check out StevRayBro's recap below.
