• Hey, It's That Voice! #2: Deedee Magno Hall

It's time for another exciting installment of "Hey It's That Voice!" Today, we will begin looking at voices behind the Crystal Gems. They have been on the planet Earth for millennia, fighting off various threats. But who are the voices of these protectors? We will start by looking at the voice of the spear-wielding Crystal Gem, Pearl.

Pearl has a talent of pulling at our heart strings. Whether she is remembering Rose, singing a heartfelt song, or even just telling us about her flaws, she can make us cry. It's a mixture of both the magnificent writing of Rebecca Sugar with the whole Crewniverse and the wonderful voice acting of Deedee Magno Hall.

    I'm not crying....you're crying....

Deedee Lynn Magno Hall, born 1975, has been acting for many, many years. Her first major role was back in the late 1980s on the revival of The All-New Mickey Mouse Club (known for launching the careers of Keri Russell, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez of *NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Ryan Gosling). While on The Mickey Mouse Club, Magno was a member of the Disney Channel made pop-band The Party, who were signed to the Walt Disney Company label, Hollywood Records. With The Party, Magno and the rest of the band would perform on The Mickey Mouse Club and rise to popularity in the early 90s, with three studio albums, one EP, and five charting singles being released before the group disbanded in 1993. The Party went on tour and opened for acts such as Taylor Dayne, Vanilla Ice, Hi-Five and Color Me Badd. Their highest charting single, a cover of "In My Dreams" originally written and recorded by the American heavy metal band Dokken, reached #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and made Deedee's lead vocals a staple of the early 90s music scene.

It was the 90s. It was a different time.

The Party came to an end (pun intended) in 1993 with all five members going their separate ways. As for Deedee, she focused on the stage. She took to musical theater over the years. Some of her roles throughout her career include Kim in the Broadway production of Miss Saigon (which she reprised on the national tour), the role of Nessarose in the national tour of Wicked, the touring cast of If/Then, and, quite recently, the rock musical The Who's Tommy (based on the album/film of the same name by The Who). Also, fans of Disney might be interested to know that Deedee has lent her acting and voice talents to the Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectaular as Princess Jasmine. While the show is no longer performing at Disney's California Adventure, you can still hear her on the original cast recording to the production.

Outside of the musical realm, Deedee still performed on the big and small screens. Most notably, she was a student in Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit, had a minor role in made-for-television film Rear Window, and the 2002 film Face.

In 2013, Deedee has reunited with three of the other four members of The Party, and they are working on a new album, After Party. There are also some rumors floating around about a possible solo album from her as well.

And that will just about do it for the wonderful voice of Pearl, Deedee Magno Hall! Thank you for reading and do join me next time, where we will look at the voice of Amethyst!
