SU taught a great lesson about growing up - that kids shouldn't rush it, and different people grow up at different rates. Steven may be a bit of a late bloomer for his age, but Connie, Greg, and the Crystal Gems all accept him no matter what. Not only did the episode demonstrate that it's okay to not grow up at the same rate as your peers, but it's also amazingly supportive to not judge friends who may be late to puberty.
