Hello hello, and welcome back to that article that lets you look at the people who voice the characters on Steven Universe! Welcome back to "Hey, It's That Voice!" Today, we are going to look at the voice behind Connie's father, Mr. Maheswaran!
Mr. Maheswaran, or also known by his first name of Doug, is Connie's father. While we only have seen him twice, we have learned quite a bit about him. He's a private security guard, he's bad a driving, likes Greg's cherry sweater, and enjoyed Garnet's "sense of humor". He seems to be a very caring father and husband, and he's a character I hope we get see more of. But who is the voice behind this father? Why, that is Crispin Freeman!
While Connie might not have Crystal Gem warriors for parents, she does have two great ones. |
Born February 9, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois the eldest of three children. He attended Latin School of Chicago, graduating in 1990 before attending Williams College where he earned a Bachelors of Science, majoring in theater and minoring in computer science. Not long after, he would attend Columbia University where he would earn his Master of Fine Arts in acting.
As a child, Crispin was captivated by the American adaptations of anime such as Speed Racer, Voltron, Star Blazers, Robotech, and most notably Battle of the Planets. There's a story that a young Freeman liked the character Mark (voiced by voice acting legend Casey Kasem) that he wanted to change his name to Mark at one point. At the suggestion of a friend, Freeman called Central Park Media about applying for a job supplying English dubs for anime. At first, he declined but remembered how much he enjoyed anime as a kid. With that, he began his voice acting career voicing Zelgadis Greywords in the anime Slayers.
The following list includes the anime that Freeman has voiced through his impressively large career. Starting in 1998, Freeman has dubbed for Revolutionary Girl Utena, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Record of Lodoss War, Geobreeders, Virgin Fleet, Photon, Shamanic Princess, Boogiepop Phantom, Angel Sanctuary, Assemble Insert, RG Veda, Now and Then, Here and There, Rurouni Kenshin, Cosmo Warrior Zero, I My Me! Strawberry Eggs, Vandread, X/1999, Digimon Frontier, Argento Soma, .hack//Liminality, Chobits, Read or Die, s-Cry-ed, The Big O, Geneshaft, Spirit of Wonder, Witch Hunter Robin, Last Exile, .hack//Sign, Kikaider 01, Wolf's Rain, Kaze no Yojimbo, .hack//Legend of the Twilight, Rave Master, Angel Tales, Please Twins!, Zatch Bell!, Scrapped Princess, Planetes, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Mars Daybreak, IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix, Eureka Seven, Noein, Blood+, Phoenix, Digimon Data Squad, Code Geass, Lucky Star, Strait Jacket, Marvel Anime: Wolverine, Tenkai Knights, Fate/Zero, and God Eater.
Top row, left to right: Alucard from Hellsing and Koichiro "Cole" Iketani from Initial D. Middle row, left to right: Togusa from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Itachi Uchiha from Naruto. Bottom row, left to right: Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara!!. |
However, out of all his anime roles, Freeman is best know for the above anime roles. He has provided the English voice of every incarnation of Alucard from Hellsing. He also provided the voice of Koichiro Iketani from Initial D, better known as "Cole" for the English translation. Freeman has also provided the voice of Togusa from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, one of my favorite anime. Fans of Naruto might recognize Freeman as the voice of Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke's older brother.
He also has given the English voice of Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as well as Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara!!.
Quite an impressive resume for a solely anime, but that does not even cover the voice work he has done for films. He has lent his voice to Grave of the Fireflies, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Space Travelers, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Slayers Premium, Howl's Moving Castle, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society, and Tiger & Bunny: The Rising.
That still doesn't cover all of Freeman's voice over roles. In fact, he has quite a significant amount of roles in video games. He has starred in the .hack series (including Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine), Tales of Symphonia (one of my favorite video games), Kingdom Hearts II, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, Baten Kaitos Origins, Xenosaga series, Justice League Heroes, various Naruto video games (reprising his role as Itachi Uchiha as well as others), Gothic 3, the .hack//G.U. series, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Rogue Galaxy, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Watchmen: The End Is Nigh, MagnaCarta 2, White Knight Chronicles, Clash of the Titans, Valkyria Chronicles II, Transformers: War for Cybertron, God of War III, White Knight Chronicles II, Resistance 3, Diablo III, Marvel Heroes, God of War: Ascension, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Madagascar 3: The Video Game, Batman: Arkham Origins, Bayonetta 2, Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Batman: Arkham Knight, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, World of Final Fantasy, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Also, there is one major role that Freeman has had within the past year: voicing Winston from the 2016 video game Overwatch.

And we are still not done with the number of roles Crispin Freeman has done. He has also provided voices for characters in several cartoons (particularly providing voices for comic characters). He has voiced Electro in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Multiple Man and Maverick in Wolverine and the X-Men, the Scott Lang incarnation of Ant-Man in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Speedy/Arsenal in both Young Justice and most recently with the direct-to-video Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

Whew! That was quite a lot of roles for one person! And that will do it for this edition of "Hey, It's That Voice!" Join me next time where we will look at the voice behind Connie's mother!
