All gems on Homeworld have a purpose, that's a fact. But it seems like Topaz cannot achieve her full potential without having 2 of her around. Even small guard gems like rubies seem to travel in groups, as we've seen on multiple occasions. So are some gems made to work with each other as part of their purpose?
